Copyright
The articles and photographs on this website have been created/taken by Ashley Smith. A small number of modern photographs are the work of other authors and are credited accordingly, as is any quoted material.
No original material (written or photographs) should be distributed, modified, republished, or otherwise, without prior permission, particularly for commercial use. Please contact me via the Contact page or at portland2546@googlemail.com for permission. Non-commercial usage is generally welcomed as long as appropriate credit is provided.
All historical photographs and postcards from the 19th and early 20th centuries are believed to be in the public domain. As they are believed to be free from copyright restrictions, they may be freely reused. Credit to the website is not essential but welcomed; all old photos and postcards have been manually cleaned and restored prior to being added to the website.
Infringement issues
Sadly the material on this website (both text and images) has been the victim of copyright infringement and plagiarism over the last few years. My main concern is when material is used by others for commercial gain. In August 2018, after a particularly rampant period, I made the decision to temporarily close the website and have now reluctantly formed this separate "Copyright" page in the hope that it will deter future incidents.
This website has been created as a labour of love and is solely intended to be an educational resource. In consideration of the effort, time and expense involved, it's always disheartening when I find substantial portions of my work taken without permission. I have found examples in recent local history books, local information boards and websites. Dorset Echo have been repeat offenders; the latest incident seeing one of my own photographs on their website with no credit or permission. While no historical fact can be held under copyright law, the way in which its written, its presentation and collective format can be, as with most non-fiction work.
Copyright aside, acknowledgement to "portlandhistory.co.uk" is always appreciated if the material here has been used as a major source elsewhere. Each page on this website contains a "References" section to ensure all sources used are fairly acknowledged and recognised. If credit is provided for using this website in other work, not only does it respect the material found here, but it also maintains a link to the sources used in these articles.
