Queen Anne House

Queen Anne House is a house of early 18th century origin in Fortuneswell. The house (including its boundary wall and gate piers) has been a Grade II* listed building since May 1993. It is considered one of the finest houses of its period on the island.
History
Queen Anne House dates to the early 18th century when it was built as a private residence by the Gilbert family, who were wealthy quarry merchants. The house is now run as a luxury bed and breakfast, which is tailored for couples. The accommodation is made up of four bedrooms, which are individually decorated and named Oyster, Lotus, White and Garden. The B&B has been awarded 4 Stars by AA.
Design
The two-storey house is built of Portland stone with a slate roof. Some of the stonework incorporated into the rear of the house is of an earlier date than the rest of the building. A low boundary wall encloses the property. In 1970, the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England described the house as the "finest and most complete house of this period on the island". In a 1976 issue of Country Life, the house was included as an example of a Georgian era house on Portland of "sophisticated stamp".
